Question: What is your primary motivation for being a Christian?

( Back )

Answer #1:

Fear of death is the deep seated motivation for most religious belief

Answer #2:

I choose to follow Christ because he is the way and because I want to

Answer #3:

Fear of death is not the reason for being Christian. On the contrary, Christians have NO fear of death.

Answer #4:

What's wrong with comparing the christian god with hitler? People have been killing jews on his name, and denying rights to homosexuals, and used the bible to promote slavery...

Answer #5:

The only logical explanation I can think of is brainwash and indoctrination.

Answer #6:

I didnt, I was raised into it. I deconverted six years ago. Im not going back either. The comparison to Hitler is a fair one, considering what the christians have done throught history.

Answer #7:

Because it seems to hang together to me, and it answers some of the questions science isn't even qualified to answer.

Answer #8:

It wasn't much of a choice for me. God simply barged into my life , when I was about 35. I saw enough things in my first year, that I will never be able to doubt His existence. Now I feel that I think similarly to the way He does. Not to say that I am actually holy, but I understand a bunch of the things that the book says and agree with them

Answer #9:

for those who follow God because they are afraid and fear is a way to control the masses, well, that would compare God to hitler. that is also a very negative way to view it.
i started following God because my parents were perfect Christians and brought me to church every sunday. then, when i got older, i questioned: why am i Christian? why do i believe this? do i really even believe?
it took a while, but eventually, through mission trips and rock concerts and song lyrics and incredible, powerful experiences, i felt God. first, i felt His true love for me, which was something i've always struggled with. then i felt Him working through me; God isn't powerless against our suffering, He works through humans to reach out to others and spread Him and improve our earth. then, i felt His plan for me; i now know that God created me the way i am for a reason, and now i know how He wants me to go out into the world and live my life.
i chose to follow Christ because i could feel that unexplainable light, that love, and that understanding that is really hard to compete with. i questioned Him and emerged stronger than i ever have been.

Answer #10:

There is no other option but to follow what you know is the truth. Why choose ignorance and blindness?

Answer #11:

Well, I made the choice after he changed my life.

I was really going down the tubes, with addictions to self-harm, serious suicidal thoughts, and uncontrolable anger. The way God changed me was very different than the way he changes other people, in my opinion (that is NOT to say that I am better than others). I was sick with a fever of 104-105 and the swine flu. I actually thought to myself that I didn't want to live through it. Then, I played a video game that changed my life. It had peaceful sounds, loving characters, and an advanced plot. I then wondered why I couldn't have a lighter, happier life like the music in the video game. I started to read the Bible and pray a lot more. That's when it happened.

Gradually, I became less sad with less anger and hate. My world became lighter. I gained good friends for which I am very grateful. And I suppose that I looked at the world through new eyes. Then I realized that I was naturally obeying God's law without thinking! What Atheists and Agnostics sometimes don't realize is that when you become a child of God, it's not like you're bound to God's Law, you become free in it! And, I'm not gonna lie, you become a bit of a different person. : )

That's my story. I suppose there are a lot of other good ones on this page as well. It's true, and I hope you enjoyed it. Jesus Bless!
